Susan, in Escondido California asks “I have a disability that prevents me from working. I did not work long enough to qualify for Social Security Disability, but my late husband did. Can I qualify for Disability benefits? If you are between the ages of 50-60 and have a disability that qualifies for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, and if the disability started before the death of your spouse or within seven years after his/her death, then you can qualify for Benefits as a Disabled widow (or widower). You will not be able to apply online for survivors benefits, but you can complete the online Adult Disability Report form and then contact the Social Security Administration to get the process started. Just like anyone who applies for disability, your medical records will need to show that you have a qualifying disability. The same disability approval process will be used for you as with anyone who applies for disability. If you have been denied disability benefits, or if you have questions about applying for disability benefits, talk with a disability attorney.
